Intersexion

Runtime: 68′

The first question any new parent asks… “Is it a boy or a girl?”

What if it’s neither? 1 in 2,000 babies is born with genitalia so ambiguous that the doctors cannot easily answer this question.

Intersexion sets out to de-mystify intersex, looking beyond the shame and secrecy that defines many intersex births. With interviews of intersex people in America, Ireland, Germany, South Africa and Australia, the film explores how these individuals navigate their way through childhood, adolescence, relationships and adulthood, when they don’t fit the binary model of a solely male and female world.

The film was followed by a Q&A with guest speakers:

  • Sophie Aujean, Senior Policy and Programmes Officer, ILGA (European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association)
  • Miriam van der Have, Co-Chair of the Organisation Intersex International Europe (OII Europe) and Executive Director of the Dutch Intersex Network Foundation (NNID)
  • Dima Yared, United Nations Human Rights Officer
