World Science Day: Water Cooperation

World Science Day

World Science Day is celebrated each year on the 10th of November. It offers a unique opportunity to demonstrate how science is relevant to our daily lives and to engage the scientific community, policy makers and the public.

The theme of World Science Day 2013 was chosen in collaboration with the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013.

UN Water called upon UNESCO to chose a theme for World Science Day that was relevant for the International year of Water Cooperation.

This year's theme, Science for Water Cooperation: Sharing Data, Knowledge and Innovations, highlights the key role played by Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in addressing global water challenges.

Science for water cooperation is not only about scientists: local communities, particularly women and indigenous peoples are the holders of detailed knowledge of their water resources. They provide innovative approaches for quality and reliability, restrictions and acceptable storage methods and must be involved. By engaging communities and integrating all knowledge, including traditional and indigenous knowledge as well as the social and human sciences, water cooperation can also contribute to social transformation and to strengthen the social fabric of communities.

By building bridges between science and society, the aim is to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science, while underscoring the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

In addition to World Science Day, the UN General Assembly decided to observe the International Week of Peace and Science. The annual celebration of this event is a significant contribution towards the promotion of science, technologies and peace, as well as in generating greater awareness amonst the public towards the association between science and peace.
