Brussels – Come and celebrate the 69th anniversary of the United Nations with us on the Grand-Place in Brussels this Sunday, 26th of October (between 11 am and 5 pm). Many surprises with the theme ‘Green Cities’ will be waiting for you, including games and activities for all ages, an exhibition and an urban garden.

In a festive and family friendly atmosphere the UN team will organise a series of activities and information stands in front of the City Hall, offering information from all of the 26 United Nations agencies located in Belgium. Many of two hundred and fifty UN staff who work for the UN in Brussels will be there to celebrate this day together with the public.

A green theme throughout the day

The focus of the 2014 edition of UN DAY is ‘Green Cities’. UN Day provides an opportunity to highlight the actions that every UN agency and their partners undertake to integrate their daily priorities with the fight for sustainable development and against climate change. It also forms an opportunity to present to the public various specific initiatives such as urban gardening, home composting, recycling, cycling as a means of urban transport, etc.

On the occasion of UN Day, the UN team and the City of Brussels will join forces and together with the support of Mr Ahmed El Ktibi - Alderman of International Solidarity - they will offer a programme that is both entertaining and educational.

Participants in the event include; the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs; Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation; the United Nations Associations (APNU and VVN); the Brussels Services for Green Spaces; Agenda 21 and the Jane Goodall Institute. The public will be invited to discover how the actions of United Nations affect their daily lives and how they can get personally involved. It will also be an opportunity for their voices to be heard on topics such as the post-2015 sustainable development goals, climate change etc.
