UN Committee against Torture gathers in Geneva

27.7.2015 - This morning the UN Committee against Torture (CAT) gathered in Geneva to hear the measures taken by Slovakia, Iraq and Switzerland to prevent and punish acts of torture. Over the next three weeks, representatives of these countries will present on their national efforts to uphold the requirements of Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

CAT’s 55th session opened with a statement relating these protections to those that should be afforded to migrants in the current crisis. These remarks were made by Carla Edelenbos, Chief of the Petitions and Inquiries Section of the Human Rights Treaties Division of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at the Palais Wilson, where the high commission is based. Following this message from Ms. Edelenbos, the Committee moved to approve the agenda for the coming weeks.

Tomorrow at 10:00am the Committee will consider the Slovakia’s third periodic report (CAT/C/SVK/3/Rev.1). There will then be replies held Wednesday afternoon following consideration of an initial report is made by Iraq (CAT/C/IRQ/1).  Switzerland’s seventh periodic report (CAT/C/CHE/7) will be heard on Monday, 3 August. Throughout this time, live broadcasts on webcast will be aired during public addresses,  while private meetings will also be held with non-governmental organizations and human rights institutions to hear complaints and alleged violations of the convention.
