Sustainable Development Summit: striving for a better world

Summit global goals

24.9.2015 - Over 150 world leaders are expected to attend the three-day Sustainable Development Summit at the UN Headquarters in New York this weekend. The ultimate aim of the summit is to formally adopt the universal sustainable development agenda that will serve as a mutual framework for the 193 Member States as they strive towards peace, shared prosperity and well-being for all over the next 15 years.

Summit global goals educationIn anticipation of the Summit and to raise awareness, UN Headquarters wasilluminated with massive projectionswith the Sustainable Development Goals as well as images relating to the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. The projections were developed in collaboration with the Global Goals campaign created by filmmaker Richard Curtis. The ambitious campaign aims to reach seven billion people in seven days with news of the Goals.

Tomorrow, the Summit will begin with an address to the General Assembly by Pope Francis. The Pope is expected to discuss such themes as poverty, social justice and climate change. After this, UNICEF goodwill ambassadors Shakira and Angélique Kidjo will perform and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai will share a message alongside 193 young representatives from all UN member states. The Summit will then officially open. Once the Goals are adopted, every Goal will be read out by different people – politicians, schoolchildren, artists and so on.

The Transforming Our World: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development consists of a Declaration, 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets, a section on means of implementation and renewed global partnership, as well as a framework for review and follow-up. It builds on the successful outcome of the Addis Ababa Conference on Financing for Development and is expected to have a positive effect on the Conference on Climate Change in Paris this December.
