The UN in Brussels celebrates the 70th anniversary on the Grand Place

In a festive and family friendly atmosphere, the UN organised the United Nations Day on the Grand Place in Brussels on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the organization.

The focus of the 2015 edition of UN Day was “70 years for We the Peoples”, referring to the first three words of the UN Charter, which came into force on 24 October 1945. The UN Day provided an opportunity to highlight the actions that each UN agency, and the international community as a whole, have undertaken in the past 70 years, and will be undertaking in the future.

The UN team in Brussels, the City of Brussels and their partners joined forces to offer a programme that was both entertaining and educational. On the Grand Place, adults and children were able to visit a wide range of information stands and receive information about the work of the UN and its four main pillars - peace and security, human rights, development and humanitarian action - and how the actions of the United Nations affect their daily lives.

Furthermore, the public could get involved in a series of activities such as a #UN70 Wall of Wishes, a dreamcatcher workshop, an insect tapas bar and a grasshopper farm. It was also an ideal opportunity for their voices to be heard on topics such as the post-2015 sustainable development goals, climate change etc and learn how they can get personally involved.
