16 September 2016—highlights from the 2016 Paralympics Games, we mark the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, and we welcome the United Nations Summit for Refugees and Migrants due to take place on 19 September 2016.

The UN General Assembly will host a high-level Summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants, with the aim of bringing countries together behind a more humane and coordinated approach. The Summit is an all-day event on Monday 19 September 2016 at the UNHQ in New York.

Ability over disability: some highlights from the 2016 Paralympic Games

“The Games not only showcase the extraordinary abilities of athletes living with a disability, they also promote the rights of all persons with disabilities.”- Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.

Produced through a collaboration between the UN agency, FC Barcelona Foundation and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), UNICEF said that the video illustrates “the power of sports to level the playing field for everyone.”

A Syrian refugee, Ibrahim Al-Hussein who lost his right leg in a bomb blast in 2013 has competed in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle events in the S10 class at the Paralympics in Rio.

“Ozone and climate: Restored by a world united”

The theme of this year’s International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer recognizes the collective efforts of the parties to the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol towards the restoration of the ozone layer over the past three decades, and the global commitment to combat climate change.
