Secretary-General comments on Redesign Panel's recommendations (A/61/758)
English, French & Spanish: http://www.un.org/Docs/journal/asp/ws.asp?m=A/61/758
The report of the Redesign Panel on the internal system of administration of justice in the United Nations was issued last summer (A/61/205 - http://www.un.org/Docs/journal/asp/ws.asp?m=A/61/205). Now the comments of the Secretary-General have been issued (A/61/758). According to the note, the fundamental reasons the UN needs a functioning, well-resourced system of internal justice are: UN staff have no legal recourse to national courts for employment-related grievances; the UN, an organization involved in setting norms and standards and advocating for the rule of law, has a duty to offer staff timely, effective and fair justice; to gain the confidence of both staff and management and thereby promote mutual trust and enhance accountability; and to provide access to all staff, wherever they are located. The document includes organizational charts for the proposed informal and formal systems of UN internal justice. Financial implications of the proposals are outlined in detail.

Secretary-General's Proposals (A/61/749)

The current Department of Peacekeeping Operations would be reconfigured to two departments, a Department of Peace Operations and a Department of Field Support. The proposal for the Department for Disarmament Affairs would establish a new office directly reporting to the Secretary-General. The document includes organization charts for the proposed departments.

A new study by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) shows that community-based interventions aimed at halting violence against women can yield significant results. “Programming to Address Violence Against Women” offers case studies to show how targeted and planned interventions can reduce gender-based violence. The lessons from the case studies are distilled in a companion booklet, “Ending Violence Against Women: Programming for Prevention, Protection and Care”, and an online multimedia exhibit integrates the text from both booklets with videos from each of the ten countries, and links to related UNFPA resources.
