World Population Day

World Population: Countdown to 7 billion

The clock is ticking. The World Population is predicted to hit the seven billion mark on 31 October this year. "A world of 7 billion is both a challenge and an opportunity," UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director Mr. Babatunde Osotimehin said in announcing the UN prediction.

The world population has increased by one billion since 1999 and by two billion since 1987. “What is astounding is that the last two billions have been reached in record time... The population has been adding new billions every 12 years in the last 25 years," said Mrs. Hania Zlotnik, Director of the Population Division at the UN Department of Economic and Social Affiars (DESA).

One world- 7 billion unique stories

This year humanity is reaching a historical milestone. Before the year is finished, 7 billion human beings will be sharing this earth. On the 11 July, World Population Day, we should all as individuals stop for a moment and think about the significance of this remarkable fact.

The number 7 billion is a call for celebration. Human beings are living longer, more prosperous lives now than ever before. Globally, the average life expectancy during the years 2005-2010 reached an unprecedented high of 68 years. Compare this to the average life expectancy of 8 years in the years 1945-1950.

World Population Day – July 11, 2011

On 31 October 2011, world population will reach 7 billion, according to the United Nations Population Division. This global milestone presents a challenge, an opportunity, and a call to action. Whether we can live together on a healthy planet will depend on the choices that we make now. Therefore, today, on World Population Day, UNFPA is launching a global campaign called 7 Billion Actions to create a more just and sustainable world.
