17.9.2015 - The first Ciné-ONU event of the season took place at our new home, the Italian Cultural Institute, since our last very successful screening of ‘Landfill Harmonic’ at the Goethe Institute.

We chose the award-winning documentary, ‘The Price We Pay’ by Harold Crooks, to highlight the outcome of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development, which took place in Addis Ababa in July.

PWP poster 2The Price We Pay reveals the dark history and dire present-day reality of big-business tax avoidance, which has seen multinationals depriving governments of trillions of dollars in tax revenues, paving the way to historic levels of inequality.

The evening concluded with a lively discussion by guest speakers Tove Ryding, Policy and Advocacy Manager for Tax Justice at Eurodad, and Claire Courteille, head of ILO Brussels.

They discussed possible solutions to prevent the large multinationals from placing the tax burden on the middle class and the poor, with Ms Courteille concluding that:

"Although the financial planet was extracted from the real world, it doesn't serve us now. A sustainable solution has to be found at the global level.”
