Green Day 1

06.06.2016 – Sun, food, music, shows and games. What more could you want on a Sunday? UNRIC’s joint stand with UNEP, WFP and FAO went down a tasty storm at this year’s World Environment Day (WED) celebrations, which took place at Parc Cinquantenaire, Brussels.

Organised by the Brussels Institute for Environment (IBGE), the information village event drew thousands of guests and was centred around the important topic of ‘Good Food’ – good meaning sustainable, as well as delicious, of course.

Although the day was about fun, at its heart lay a more serious message. On World Environment Day, more than a quarter of a billion people, half of them children, are suffering the impact of severe drought across three continents. Aid agencies are working to deliver emergency food parcels to prevent people starving, and to help build livelihood resilience to extreme weather events.

Sustainable Tastes Good!

UNRIC secured a stand in the park alongside the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The heat was on! With this year being the International Year of the Pulses, delicious treats were served up, including lentil salad and chocolate cake made from beans.

Green Day 3

It wasn’t only about food though. A variety of games were also on the menu, perhaps the most popular dish being the sack race.

While the main theme was good food, with a focus on food waste and sustainable consumption and production, a link was also made to the 2016 global WED theme of Illegal Wildlife Trade and UNEP’s #Wildforlife campaign was promoted.

Now let’s jump!
