A commitment to strengthening the United Nations and the need to respect human rights, the rule of law and the importance of the Sustainble Development Goals, partnership and youth were were among the themes that were at the heart of the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) in Luxembourg.

Founded in Luxembourg in 1946, WFUNA, with is membership of more than 100 United Nations Associations (UNAs), works to support and strengthen the United Nations. For its 70th anniversary, the United Nations Associated of Luxembourg invited member UNAs to Luxembourg for a commemoration to celebrate seven decades of partnership.

In a keynote speech to the UNA members, Mr. Jean Asselborn, the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, focused on the ``complex set of security, environmental and development threats’’ that the world faces in 2016.

Turning to Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted in September 2015 in New York by the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Asselborn said that ``Agenda 2030, and in particular its goal 16, aiming for the creation of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies, provides a powerful antitode to hate and division. All we must do is rise to the numerous challenges that are facing us.’’

In his address at the event at the University of Luxembourg on Wednesday, October 19th, Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, Secretary-General of the World Federation of United Nations Associations, spoke of the need of striving to sustain peace and the importance of partnership.
