Guterres declares supports for EU efforts on Iran nuclear deal

United Nations Secretary-General, A. Guterres, Brussels visit, May 2018

15 may 2018. UN Secretary General António Guterres today declared his support for the European Union´s attempts at reviving the nuclear agreement with Iran.

“We fully support the efforts that the European Union is making in order to rescue the JCPA“, the Secretary General said, referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers.

At a press conference with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the Secretary General said he had been fully briefed on the measures being prepared by the European Union, which will be discussed at a EU Summit in Sofia tonight. He said he could only express his wish that they would be successful.

He lauded the “exemplary cooperation“ between the European Union and the United Nations. „That support is necessary. We live in a dangerous world. For the first time in many decades the non-proliferation regime both in relation to nuclear weapons and to chemical weapons is put into question.“

“The cold war is back. With a difference. There are not today the mechanisms that existed in the past cold war of dialogue, of contact, of control that made sure that things would not spiral out of control by any kind of incident.“

Asked about reports on a backlash in the preparation for a US-North Korea Summit, Mr. Guterres said:

„I hope that in the end common sense will prevail, and the Summit will take place and it will be successful.“
