On 21st September, United Nations Cinema will be screening the ‘Queen of Ireland’ in London in partnership with the British Museum, as part of the Ian Hislop curated exhibition ‘I,Object’, to highlight the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN’s Free and Equal Campaign.

The film tells the story of Rory O’Neill, a much loved Irish drag queen who became the accidentalface of the Yes campaign for the 2015 Irish referendum on same sex marriage. The film follows Rory’s personal journey from the small Mayo town of Ballinrobe to the world stage, building up a multi-faceted picture of a complex and compelling character through behind the scenes footage and interviews with friends, peers and protégés. Ultimately the film shows the ongoing evolution of Ireland into a truly equal society, as seen through the eyes of one of its most vivid, morally courageous and downright entertaining citizens.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with guest speakers: Rory O’Neill (Campaigner, performer and creator of ‘Panti Bliss’); Julia Ankenbrand (Learning and National partnerships at British Museum), Claude Cahn (UN Human Rights Office); moderated by Caroline Petit (UNRIC).
