The film tells the story of Jaha Dukureh who, like most other girls in Gambia, experienced genital mutilation when she was very young. Her marriage was arranged when she was eight, and as a 15-year-old she got married to a 40-year-old man in New York. Jaha's Promise is a touching story about a young girl's struggle to take control of her own body, and about having the courage to confront her father, the politicians and the community that surrounds her. This screening will be shown in partnership with the International Cooperation and Development Office at the European Commission (DEVCO) and theOffice of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Brussels (OHCHR) at Cinéma Galeries in Brussels.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with guest speakers; Patrick Farrelly, Co-director of 'Jaha's Promise'; Marjeta Jager, Deputy-Director General at DEVCO; and Veronica Birga, Chief, Women’s Rights and Gender Section at OHCHR in Brussels; moderated by Caroline Petit, UNRIC.
