In Geneva, at 2:00 p.m. in Press Room 1, UNICEF will have the pre-embargo launch of EVERY CHILD ALIVE - The urgent need to end newborn deaths. The speaker will be Justin Forsyth, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director.

Tuesday, 20 February 

Today is the World Day of Social Justice.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on the Middle East. 

At 10:00 a.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, the Intergovernmental conference and its preparatory process to adopt a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration begins. 

At 10:00 a.m. in Conference Room 2, there will be a Seminar on “Humanitarian Negotiation and International Mediation: Building Bridges” co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Belgium, the Department of Political Affairs, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Centre of Competence in Humanitarian Negotiation. 

In the afternoon, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). 

At 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room 5, there will be an event on the theme “Science for Water” organized by the European Union Delegation to the United Nations. 

Also at 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room 8, there will be a special event entitled “Workers on the Move: the Quest for Social Justice” on the occasion of the World Day of Social Justice co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Kyrgyzstan and the International Labour Organization (ILO)

Wednesday, 21 February

Today is International Mother Language Day.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on the maintenance of international peace and security: Purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

At 9:00 a.m. in Conference Room 2, there will be an event on the theme “Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict (OPAC) turns 18” co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Belgium, Canada, Colombia, France and Sierra Leone, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Child Soldiers International.

At 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room 12, there will be an event entitled “Ending the Detention of Migrant and Refugee Children: Best Interest Determination and Alternatives to Detention” co-organized by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See, the International Catholic Migration Commission, Caritas Internationalis, the Center for Migration Studies and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

At 3:00 p.m. in Conference Room 12, there will be open-ended informal consultations on the “Third Review Conference of States (RevCon3) to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects” organized by the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA).

In Geneva, at 9:30 a.m. in Press Room 1, the UN Office for Human Rights (OHCHR) will hold a press briefing on the Human Rights Council, 37th regular session (26 February-23 March). The speaker will be Ambassador Vojislav Šuc (Slovenia), President of the Human Rights Council (12th cycle).

Thursday, 22 February

At 9:45 a.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, there will be a parliamentary Hearing entitled “Towards a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration: A parliamentary perspective” co-organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Office of the President of the General Assembly.

In the afternoon, the Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution on the 2140 Committee. It will also be briefed on and hold consultations on the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic(MINUSCA) and CAR sanctions. 

Friday, 23 February

At 1:15 p.m. in Conference Room 5, there will be an informal dialogue on “The progress of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Financing for Development in preparing its 2018 report” organized by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
