Today, the Secretary-General will arrive in Tokyo, Japan.

Wednesday, 8 August

In Tokyo, the Secretary-General will meet with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. During his visit, the Secretary-General is also expected to meet with Foreign Minister Taro Kono. In the afternoon, the Secretary-General will travel to Nagasaki, where he will meet with the Mayor of Nagasaki, Tomihisa Taue, and other local officials, as well as with some hibakusha, or survivors of the atomic bombs.

In New York in the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

In the afternoon, the Security Council will hold consultations on Western Sahara.

Thursday, 9 August

Today is the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

In Tokyo, the Secretary-General will visit the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims before taking part in the 73rd Nagasaki Peace Ceremony. The Secretary-General will return to New York in the evening.

In New York in the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on and hold consultations on Burundi.

In the afternoon, the Security Council will have a Troop Contributing Country meeting on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

At 3 p.m. in the Economic and Social Council Chamber there will be a panel discussion on the theme “Indigenous Peoples’ Migration and Movement” on the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, co-organized by the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch, Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA); and the Department of Public Information (DPI).
