Today is World Food Day.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on the maintenance of international peace and security, specifically the root causes of conflict and the role of natural resources.

In the afternoon, the Security Council will hold consultations on the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

At 12:30p.m. in Room III, the Permanent Delegation of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva will brief on the Role of the AGFUND International Prize in promoting the UN agenda for Sustainable Development. The speakers will be: H.E. Wednesday, 17 October

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed on the Middle East, and will hold consultations on the Middle East, specifically on Syria.

In the afternoon, the Security Council will hold a meeting with the Member States that contribute troops and police to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

At 1:00 p.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Mr. Idriss Jazairy, Special Rapporteur on Unilateral Coercive Measures.

In Geneva, at 11:00 a.m. in Room III, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) will launch its State of World Population Report 2018 - The Power of Choice: Reproductive Rights and the Demographic Transition. The speaker will be Ms. Monica Ferro, Director, UNFPA Geneva.

At 11:00 a.m. in Room III, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will hold a meeting on the New Global Commodity Markets Landscape and Focus on Coffee in East Africa, part of the Commodities at a Glance Series. Th speakers will be: Pamela Coke-Hamilton, UNCTAD Director, Division on International Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities. And Olivier Wege, UNCTAD, Economist, Commodity Research and Analysis Section, Division on International Trade.

At 2:30 p.m., in Bar Serpent, the United Nations Information Service, in collaboration with ATD Fourth World, will hold an event to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty. “Leaders in the fight against poverty: the floor is yours” will consist of a series of mini round tables to cover under various angles the issue of poverty and human rights, following this year’s theme. Panelists will include François Rivasseau, Permanent Representative of France to the UN in Geneva, Janet Nelson, Vice-President of ATD Fourth World, Natacha Foucard, Chief of the Sustainable Human Development at the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), and members of associations and entities working on poverty reduction in Lyon and Geneva. A reception offered by the permanent missions of Belgium and France will follow.

Thursday, 18 October

In the morning, the Security Council will hold an open debate on the Middle East.

At 11:00 p.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Mr. Felipe González Morales, Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants and Mr. Ahmadou Tall, Chair, Committee on Migrants.

The guest at the Noon Briefing will be Ms. Bience Gawanas of Namibia, Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on Africa, who will brief on the 2018 Africa Dialogue Series, which takes place from 17 to 19 October.

Friday, 19 October

In the morning, the Security Council will be briefed and hold consultations on the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

At 1:15 p.m., in S-237, there will be a press briefing by Ms. Suela Janina, Chair of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances and Mr. Bernard Duhaime, Chair of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances.
