Agency Overview

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to eradicate hunger and malnutrition and to transform agrifood systems globally.

Created on 16 October 1945, FAO has 195 members – 194 countries and the European Union, and works in over 130 countries worldwide.

FAO Mission

FAO’s goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives while ensuring the world’s farmers are well supported, and rural areas are made more attractive for the younger generations.

FAO’s support to Members in transforming agrifood systems making them more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable is central to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Through the Four Betters (Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life for all, leaving no one behind), FAO contributes directly to SDG 1 (No poverty), SDG 2 (Zero hunger), and SDG 10 (Reduced inequalities)

FAO Liaison Office in Brussels

Established in 1997, the Liaison Office in Brussels represents FAO at the European Union institutions and the Kingdom of Belgium.

The FAO Liaison Office in Brussels maintains relations with a variety of partners and key actors, facilitating policy dialogue, ensuring information exchange and supporting resource mobilization efforts and provides support to FAO Headquarters in Rome and the global office network in their cooperation with Brussels-based partners. The Liaison Office Brussels focuses on ensuring that FAO’s mandate, objectives and strategic direction are well known and understood by a broad audience.

We communicate for impact and facilitate exchanges between FAO and a broad range of actors from the European Union institutions – including the European Commission and several of its Directorates, the Council of the EU, its Presidencies and the EU Member States, the European Parliament, the European Economic and Social Committee and the European Committee of the Regions. The Office is also in charge of liaising with the Government of Belgium (at federal and regional level), the Secretariat and Member States of the Organisation of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (OACPS), academia, civil society, the private sector, as well as other Brussels-based stakeholders and UN partners.

Key areas of work

In line with the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 and in support of the 2030 Agenda, the Office’s work is clustered around FAO’s overarching Four Betters and the following five priorities identified during the EU-FAO Strategic Dialogue 2021:

  • Food systems and One Health
  • Climate change, biodiversity and natural resources
  • Food crises, food security and resilient livelihoods
  • Sustainable agrifood value chain investments and policies
  • Food system transformation through digitalisation.

These are at the centre of FAO Liaison Office in Brussels engagement with the European Union as one of the largest resource partner in terms of voluntary contributions to FAO, and among FAO’s most important partners through programmes implemented across the world. These also form the basis of the Office’s cooperation with other strategic partners in Brussels such as the OACPS, university institutions and NGOs.
