In order to function effectively as a global organization, the United Nations Secretariat has a continuing need for staff. It is impossible to list in detail the different type of employment and internship positions for which the Organization recruits.

The specialized agencies, funds and programmes (i.e. UNESCO, UNICEF, WHO, etc.) conduct their own employment and internship programmes. The United Nations is seeking highly qualified nationals of certain countries for employment in order to achieve greater geographical balance of its professional staff. The Young professionals programme (YPP) is a recruitment initiative that brings new talent to the United Nations through an annual entrance examination.

Junior Professional Officer Programme (JPO)

The Programme offers young professionals who are graduates from universities or institutions of higher education an opportunity to acquire professional experience in the technical cooperation of the United Nations Secretariat. An Associate Expert/JPO is recruited under bilateral agreements between the United Nations and donor countries.

United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV)

The Programme offers young professionals who are graduates from universities or institutions of higher education an opportunity to acquire professional experience in the technical cooperation of the United Nations Secretariat. An Associate Expert/JPO is recruited under bilateral agreements between the United Nations and donor countries.
