Since the signature of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2012, UN Women and the European Union established a solid and longstanding partnership to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment at global, regional, and national levels. Together, the EU and UN Women have worked in more than 90 countries worldwide to push for transformative change. Today, with women’s rights and gender equality under increased attack, the EU – UN Women partnership is more important than ever.
The European Union and UN Women partnership focuses on several areas of work, including:
- increased leadership, governance and participation in public life for women,
- women’s economic empowerment
- ending violence against women and girls,
- peace and security, humanitarian action and disaster risk reduction,
- as well as climate change and digitalisation, innovation and technology.
Additionally, UN Women and the EU continuously strive to push further gender equality and women’s empowerment in key international processes such as the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the UN Security Council agenda on Women, Peace and Security, as well as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals, the International Conference on Financing for Development, the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Global Compact on Migration, the World Humanitarian Summit, the Generation Equality Forum and more.
