UNOPS works on a broad range of EU-funded programmes and projects around the globe, from the construction of roads and bridges to the promotion of human rights and livelihoods for the most vulnerable. The aim of our presence in Brussels is to increase understanding and coordination between UNOPS and the European Union institutions.

Agency Overview

UNOPS in Brussels, partnering with the European Union

In November 2008, UNOPS signed the Financial and Administrative Framework Agreement (FAFA) with the European Commission which facilitates cooperation between the two institutions. Following the signature of the FAFA, UNOPS Brussels Liaison Office was created in 2009. UNOPS is Pillar-assessed since 2015. Under this framework, UNOPS implements projects with DG INTPA, DG NEAR, DG ECHO and FPI.

In June 2020, UNOPS signed a Procedural Framework Agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to help governments better respond to emergencies such as the COVID-19, and natural disasters.

Our services cover infrastructure, project management, procurement, financial management and human resources. With this operational mandate, UNOPS is a strategic partner to the European Commission to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in fragile and conflict-affected areas, as well as in middle income countries.

What is UNOPS?

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) helps the UN and its partners provide peace and security, humanitarian and development solutions. Our mission is to help people build better lives and countries achieve peace and sustainable development. We are focused on implementation, with a commitment to UN values and private sector efficiency.

With over 7000 personnel spread across 80 countries, UNOPS provides project management, procurement and infrastructure services to governments, donors and UN organizations. Our partners rely on our proven expertise to increase the speed, cost-effectiveness and sustainability of over 1000 projects, often in the most challenging environments.

UNOPS builds infrastructure for sustainable development, such as schools, hospitals and roads in post-disaster and conflict-affected areas, as well as in economies in transition. We provide expert procurement support to help governments buy the goods and services they need. We manage projects and programmes of every size, while simultaneously enhancing the capacity of developing countries to manage their own initiatives.
