Nordic countries among top contributors to Peacebuilding Fund

Two of the Nordic countries are among the top three contributors to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund and four are among the top eleven.

While Germany is by far the biggest donor with commitments for over $105 million for 2020-2024, Sweden and Norway are second and third with respectively $61 million and $56 million. Denmark and Finland are also a generous contributors to the fund ranking number 8 and 11 with respectively contributions of $10.5 and almost $6 million.

As an example Sweden’s funding to Peacebuilding fund will promote gender equality and strengthen women’s rights, representation and access to resources, one of Sweden’s most important foreign policy priorities

„With our annual core contribution of over $29 million, Sweden remains one of the biggest donors of the UN Peacebuilding Fund,” says Anna Karin Eneström Sweden´s Permanent Representative to the UN.

Norway has for number of years been engaged in peace efforts around the world. “The Peacebuilding Fund works in a coherent way with Norway’s consistent emphasis on preventing and resolving conflicts, and engagement to bring about sustainable peace in the world’s most conflict-affected regions,“ says Mona Juul Norway´s  Permanent Representative.

PBF grateful for contributions

In a number of tweets the Fund has expressed its appreciaton of the Sweden and Norway´s generosity.

„Sweden’s flexible core support to the Secretary-General @antonioguterres Peacebuilding Fund enables the PBF to provide more support to managing conflict risks emanating from climate-change related pressures on people and resources.“

“The PBF is grateful to Norway for responding to the SG’s call for Quantum Leap support to increase the contributions made to the Fund for advancing & sustaining peace for vulnerable communities,” the Peacebuilding Fund tweeted.

The UN Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) is the organization’s financial instrument of first resort to sustain peace in countries or situations at risk or affected by violent conflict. From 2006 to 2020, the PBF has allocated nearly $1.47 billion to 62 recipient countries.
