UN Women officially opened its new global office in Bonn on November 21, 2025. This expands the organization’s global focus and strengthens its promotion of women’s rights, gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at a time when progress is under threat in many parts of the world. Alongside New York and Nairobi, the Bonn office is one of three global offices that anchor and advance UN Women’s global mandate.
“Our three global locations in New York, Nairobi and Bonn bring UN Women closer to the communities and networks in which we work and strengthen our ability to achieve better, faster and more effective results for all women and girls everywhere,” said Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women. “Germany’s leadership on gender equality remains critical, and UN Women is grateful for our long-standing partnership to advance women’s rights. We look forward to working with you from Bonn to unlock the tremendous opportunities of gender equality to contribute to sustainable development, peace and security worldwide.”
Coinciding with the adoption of UN Women’s Strategic Plan 2026-2029, UN Women’s global office in Bonn marks an important step in expanding the organization’s global presence and strengthening its ability to respond to rapidly changing needs. The new location brings together strategic public and private partnerships, communications, management and administration, strategy and sustainable funding under one roof, fostering innovation, collaboration and operational excellence. Bonn will also serve as the headquarters of the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, which leads the only system-wide, General Assembly-mandated United Nations common fund dedicated to ending all forms of violence against women and girls.
The new office is located on the Bonn UN Campus, home to more than 25 UN agencies, and connects UN Women to a dynamic ecosystem addressing sustainability, climate and environment, global development and human rights. This close connection ensures that gender equality remains at the center of UN activities in these important areas.
“We say: Welcome, UN Women! We are delighted that the new office has now opened in Bonn. Because advocating for gender equality and gender justice worldwide is a central component of our commitment to multilateralism and sustainable development,” emphasized Reem Alabali Radovan, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. “When women have the same rights and opportunities as men, there is less poverty, less hunger and more stability in the world. This is precisely the goal that unites German development cooperation and UN Women. Our joint commitment shows: We can only successfully tackle the major global challenges together. Germany remains committed to this cooperative approach – especially in times when some prefer to isolate and isolate themselves. An even greater presence of UN organizations in Germany is therefore also a visible sign of the greater importance of our country on the international stage.”
As a German UN city and global hub for sustainability, human rights and development cooperation, Bonn plays a key role in supporting UN organizations and promoting international cooperation.
“The opening of the UN Women office in Bonn is an important step for the development and growth of Bonn as an international UN and sustainability hub and its portfolio of issues,” said Bonn’s Mayor of Bonn, Guido Déus. “UN Women will not only find very good working conditions and an environment with a high quality of life for the up to 90 employees in Bonn, but also many professional points of contact and network contacts.”
With the opening of the Global Office in Bonn and the Global Office in Nairobi, Kenya, UN Women is investing in modern working methods and more agile global processes. This model strengthens the organization’s ability to advocate for all women and girls everywhere and to work closely with Member States, civil society and partners to accelerate progress on gender equality.
