Mission Statement

UNEP is the leading global voice on the environment. UNEP’s mission is to inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

UNEP is driving transformational change by drilling down on the root causes of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss and pollution.

Through cutting-edge science, coordination and advocacy, UNEP supports its 193 Member States to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and live in harmony with nature.

Agency Overview

The UNEP Brussels Office is a liaison office to the EU institutions. It was established in 2001 in order to promote and facilitate partnership-building between UNEP and EU institutions and key stakeholders in Brussels, in view of implementing the environmental dimension of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda globally and in the EU.

The Office is Headed by Veronika Hunt Šafránková since 2019.

What we do?

The Brussels Office promotes and facilitates partnership-building and cooperation in addressing environmental challenges humanity is facing, between UNEP and the EU institutions, including the European Commission, the Council of the EU, the European Parliament, the Joint Research Centre, the European Investment Bank, the European Environmental Agency and the European Space Agency.

The Team in Brussels further collaborates with other stakeholders and partners in Belgium, which include EU institutions, Permanent Missions to the EU, the Organisation of African Caribbean and Pacific States, civil society organizations, academic institutions, think tanks, financial institutions and others.

UNEP Brussels Office is focal point for the Belgian government, authorities and local partners.

We work closely with the UN family in Brussels. UNEP leads on the environmental agenda within the UN Brussels team, co-chairs respective working group, and actively engages in number of other thematic groups.

Key Areas of work

We support UNEP’s overall efforts to fulfill its mission and advance the global environmental agenda through partnership building, policy dialogues, communication and programmatic cooperation.

Our work includes:

  • Policy analysis and advocacy. We work closely with EU counterparts and stakeholders through strategic engagements and policy dialogues, informing EU partners of UNEP’s work, and the sharing of evidence-based data to inform policy decisions,
  • Communication and outreach. We raise public awareness on UNEP reports and their outcomes. This includes the organization of events to mark major international environment-related days such as World Environment Day in Brussels, the promotion of UNEP campaigns and the dissemination of UNEP messaging to wider audiences, including the general public.
  • Providing analysis of EU policies and legislation, in particular European Green Deal developments, to our Headquarters and the regional offices of UNEP.
  • Coordination and overseeing of programmatic cooperation with the EU.

Examples:

  • The Office marks annually the World Environment Day in Brussels through events and actions directed at both policymakers and the general public, including youth.

Conclusion

UNEP is the leading global voice on the environment. It provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
