Gendered economic inequalities are among the most persistent and significant of all global gender gaps.
An important contributing factor remains the underlying gender norms that keep women excluded from economic gains. Data from 2021 indicates a global 72% labour force participation rate for men, compared with 47% for women – this is a gap of 25 percentage points. Often, economic interventions and approaches pay little attention to gender norms, failing to explicitly tackle what continues to inhibit women’s rights and empowerment.
Ahead of CSW68, ODI Europe and UN Women are convening an in-person event in Brussels to launch ALIGN’s new report which outlines key evidence on successful approaches to shift norms underpinning gendered economic inequalities at community, workplace and policy levels.
CSW68 provides a strategic opportunity to amplify and integrate a norms lens to enhance policy responses in UN agreements and advance outcomes aligned with the priority theme. This launch event will showcase ALIGN’s new research on women’s economic rights and empowerment, providing a platform to delve into the report’s findings, hosting leading thinkers and policy experts to explore the recommendations for an EU audience.
