Background

The Champions of the Earth is the United Nations’ highest environmental honour. The award celebrates individuals and groups whose actions have a transformative impact on the environment. By recognizing the successes that are being achieved on the environmental frontlines, the award seeks to inspire hope and action for a more sustainable future. The Champions of the Earth are environmental trail blazers and affirm that humanity has the ingenuity and the ambition to protect and restore our environment.

The winners of the 2022 Champions of the Earth will be announced later this year. This year the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) received a record 2,200 nominations from around the world. The nominations reflected the excellent work being done by everyone from grassroots campaigners to national leaders. Following the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), the 2022 cycle shines a spotlight on efforts to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation across the world.

The Champions of the Earth are part of a legacy of people whose effective action led to the environmental victories that have transformed our societies for the better. UNEP coordinates and hosts the Champions of the Earth award. UNEP’s reputation as the global, non-partisan authority on environmental issues is built from 50 years of ground-breaking scientific research that informs global environmental policy.
