Launch of FAO flagship State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2023 report

In-person event and Q&A at FAO with report authors

Rome, Italy, 6 November 2023, 12:30 CEST

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will launch its flagship State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2023 report at an in-person event on Monday 6 November.

This year’s edition analyses the hidden costs on our health, environment, and society present in our current agrifood systems.

The report proposes true cost accounting to quantify these costs and provides a first attempt at measuring them in 154 countries.

True cost accounting allows the estimation of the hidden costs generated by market, institutional and policy failures and it provides decision-makers with the evidence needed to correct these failures and transform agrifood systems for the better.

The findings are a starting point to stimulate debate and dialogue among agrifood systems actors.

At the launch event, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu will deliver opening remarks at 12:35 CEST, followed by a presentation of the report by FAO’s Agrifood Economics Division.

A panel with high-level participants will also share their experiences in addressing these hidden costs, highlighting the importance of measuring and integrating them into decision-making in order to improve the value of agrifood systems.

A question-and-answer session will follow on how the true cost accounting approach can reinforce the environmental, social and economic sustainability of agrifood systems.

Interpretation will be provided in all UN languages.
