The IAEA, ITU, FAO, UNESCO, and the World Bank launched a competition for start-ups aimed at leveraging AI to tackle climate change impacts on food security and sustainable water management. The large-scale scientific data on soil and water management practices worldwide can be analyzed more efficiently with AI to build resilience against climate change.

The contest, launched at the AI for Good Global Summit 2023 in Geneva, offers a platform for start-ups to showcase and scale their innovative, climate-centric AI solutions. Managed by ITU with 40 other UN organizations, AI for Good promotes AI solutions that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Winners of the contest will get business matchmaking and mentoring opportunities, and the chance to present their ideas at COP28. Five problems related to food, climate-smart agriculture, and water resource management have been identified for contestants to solve. The contest’s phase one deadline is 31 August 2023, and selected start-ups will live pitch their ideas between September and November, with winners presenting at COP28.
