António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General has chaired the biannual meeting of the heads of the UN system organizations in Copenhagen.
In addition, The Secretary-General met with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.
Mr. Guterres also attended a dinner, hosted by Their Majesties, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, in honour of the gathered Senior UN Officials in Kronborg castle in Helsingor.
In a speech the Secretary-General thanked the Majesties for “choosing such a spectacular, symbolic setting.”
Dinner in Hamlet´s castle
“This magnificent Kronborg Castle is much more than the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Hamlet,” Mr. Guterres said. “But around the world, the lessons of that story echo around us. The dangers of unchecked power and the consequences of division. But unlike the tragedy that unfolded in Shakespeare’s imagination, Denmark has chosen a story of unity and principled leadership. You have shown us that true strength lies not in solitude, but in solidarity.”
Adapting to New Realities
The Secretary-General also engaged with UN staff based in Copenhagen, as well as with Danish media. During their biannual session, the heads of the UN system organisations reflected on current world affairs as they affect and are related to the UN system. They engaged in deliberations on “Adapting to New Realities: Leveraging the UN80 Initiative” and “Upholding Respect for International Law”.
