Spanish company Secuoya Studios, the producer behind commercial hits including Zorro and Monte Cristo, has become the first Spanish-language production company to receive the MIP SDG Award, presented on 15 October 2025 during RX France’s MIPCOM Cannes (13–16 October), a gathering of over 10,000 delegates in the audiovisual industry.
Now in its sixth edition, the award recognises outstanding achievements in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through creative content and storytelling.
Celebrating the audiovisual industry’s role in advancing the SDGs
The MIP SDG Award, an initiative of RX, one of the active members of the SDG Media Compact and organiser of the largest annual television market in the world, celebrates audiovisual organisations whose work drives meaningful action on the SDGs. The SDG Media Compact unites over 400 international broadcasting organisations and entertainment companies dedicated to creating compelling stories that communicate climate action and the sustainable development goals to millions of viewers worldwide.
Previous recipients of the award include Ubongo, creators of children’s edutainment in Africa; Open Planet, a free online library of environmental footage; natural history producers Studio Silverback; Junk Kouture, Ireland’s sustainable fashion competition; UK broadcaster Sky; A+E Networks and the Association of Commercial Televisions (ACT).
The power of purpose-driven creative content
The MIP SDG Award recognised Secuoya Studios for fostering a culture of collaboration in sustainability through its Greenbook guide, a certified production framework made available to the entire audiovisual industry. Since its launch, the guide has helped productions achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emissions and eliminated hundreds of kilos of plastic waste, demonstrating how shared knowledge and cooperative practices can drive meaningful change across the sector.
In a virtual address to the ceremony, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming praised the industry’s potential: “You have the creativity and the reach to drive change. When stories are told with purpose, they spark debate, change perceptions, and influence decisions – even at the highest levels.”
UNRIC Deputy Director Caroline Petit presented the award to Secuoya Studios’ CEO Brendan Fitzgerald, highlighting the business case for sustainability: “You demonstrate to us all that acting responsibly and sustainably is not a cost. Putting the SDGs at the heart of your company’s strategy is an investment and a smart business decision.”
Leading by example
Brendan Fitzgerald commented on the honour, saying: “At Secuoya Studios, we view sustainability as a guiding commitment that shapes the way we create, produce, and share content with the world. It’s a commitment based on belief in innovation, technology, and strategic alliances that drive lasting change. Beyond the honour itself, having this stage at MIPCOM allows us to demonstrate just how universally adoptable many of these practices can be.”
Companies everywhere are recognising that audiences are paying close attention to values as much as visuals, and that every decision made along the production chain matters.
As the SDG Media Compact continues to expand year after year, it reflects a broader transformation within the industry, one in which creative innovation and sustainable development progress hand in hand.
