The ongoing war in Ukraine puts the rights of millions of children to a quality education at risk. The European Union is funding repairs of Ukrainian schools in several regions in partnership with UNOPS to ensure educational facilities remain safe.
The project aims to repair over 70 schools to provide safe and accessible learning environments to over 15,000 students, including those in primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education, and improving the working conditions of teachers and schools’ personnel.
The works cover light and medium-scale repairs, including the replacement of windows and doors damaged by blast waves, roof and ceiling repairs, upgrading electrical systems, and improving heating and water supply infrastructure, as well as other necessary interventions depending on the specific needs and level of damage of each facility.
The project also includes the repair of the basements, enabling children and teachers to continue learning safely during air-raid alerts.
To date, 65 schools have been rehabilitated, benefiting approximately 13,453 students in offline learning, including 220 children with physical disabilities, across Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions. The total project budget is €28 million.
