The FAO Liaison Office with the EU and Belgium, in collaboration with key European partners, proposes a policy dialogue around The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2026, focusing on the report’s thematic chapter: “Understanding and Addressing the High Cost of a Healthy Diet.”
The presentation will be made by David Laborde, Director, FAO’s Agrifood Economics Division.
The event will bring together representatives of EU institutions, Member States, UN agencies, academia, and other stakeholders to discuss the implications of the report’s findings for food security, nutrition, and agrifood systems transformation. The SOFI 2026 report highlights that billions of people worldwide remain unable to afford a healthy diet, despite progress in reducing hunger in some regions.
It underlines the importance of investments in productivity, infrastructure, logistics, storage, and efficient value chains to reduce the cost of nutritious foods, particularly fruits, vegetables and animal-source foods.
The Brussels discussion will explore how global findings can inform European and international policy debates, while fostering exchanges on evidence-based solutions that make healthy diets more affordable, accessible and sustainable, thereby contributing to the achievement of SDG 2 and broader nutrition objectives.
