UN specialist to examine human rights of the Sámi

The Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, Mr. Fabian Salvioli, will conduct an official visit to Finland from 11 to 15 March 2024 and Sweden from 18 to 22 March 2024.

The purpose of the visit is to examine the transitional justice measures adopted by the authorities in Finland and Sweden to address the legacy of human rights violations endured by indigenous peoples, such as the Sámi peoples in Finland and Sweden and Tornedalians (Sweden), in the context of assimilation and related policies.

The visit will allow the Special Rapporteur to acquire a broad view of the initiatives taken; identify good practices, gaps and shortcomings; and formulate recommendations in that regard.
